Player Research are an award-winning video games user research studio based in Brighton, helping game developers to ensure that their players experience games just as the designer intended. By drawing upon scientific practices including Human-Computer Interaction, Psychology, Computer Science, Design and Engineering, we observe, interview and research and report on video game players and their behaviour – allowing the developers to radically improve their games by understanding how their players think and play.
Founded in January 2012, Player Research have contributed to well-over 100 games across iPhone, iPad, PlayStation, Xbox, Wii, 3DS, Vita, PC and other platforms – impacting more than 350 million players worldwide. Our projects include much-loved game franchises such as LittleBigPlanet, Moshi Monsters, Dead Trigger, Sniper Elite, Devil May Cry, LEGO, Formula One, Harry Potter and many, many more. Our clients include Sony Computer Entertainment, SEGA, Microsoft, JAGEX, BBC, Channel 4, NaturalMotion Games – companies based throughout the UK, Europe and North America.
We are comprised of five staff, structured into two teams of two researchers and one Director.
As a research company, one of our key services is playtesting, whereby we recruit ordinary people from around the Brighton & Hove area to play pre-release games for us, and we reward them with cash for their time. We have our own database where people can sign up to receive invitations for playtests, and this always needs expanding and curating. In the last 12 months we have greatly expanded our playtest turnover, and require additional personnel to grow our internal database, as well as manage an increasing number of players attending playtests.
The primary objective of this role is to hold sole responsibility for expanding our database of local players, encouraging people of all ages and game experience to sign-up for playtesting. You will design and implement the strategy for expanding our player database, using the most appropriate methods to meet agreed goals. This is a placement suitable only for the self-motivated and independent applicant, who works well in a project-based environment requiring a broad range of skills – from graphic design for leaflets and posters, to customer-facing (player-facing) interpersonal skills, recruitment, marketing, databases and people management.
You will also be responsible for handling player recruitment for all playtests. This involves sending out initial emails, collating responses, and liaising with selected players.
In addition, we anticipate that applicants will have interests in researching and compiling ‘market research’-type reports based on the data we collect during playtests, or through other data-collection means, such as questionnaires or surveys. This type of work can be undertaken if the role progresses to a full-time position. Applicants should be able to demonstrate interest and/or experience in report-writing and market research or consumer insight.

Player Research is based in Hove, within a short walking distance (1 minute) to bus stops, and walkable from both Hove (15 mins) and Brighton (25 mins) rail stations.
